Answers to quiz 1

1. Tomas met Tereza during a medicine congress in a small Czech town: “He had first met Tereza in a small Czech town.”(p6) She was her waitress in the café from the hotel he was staying in.
2. 10 days later Tereza goes to Tomas` apartment and they make love: “Ten days later she paid him a visit. They made love the day she arrived.” (p6)
3. Tomas felt an instant love for her: “He had come to feel an inexplicable love for all but complete stranger”. (p6)
4. While Tereza was visiting Tomas she gets sick: “That night she came down with a fever and stayed a whole week in his flat with the flu”. (p6)
5. Tomas decides to stay with her and take care of her for “a whole week”.
6. Tereza lies about her motivation to come to Prague. She says she came to work .“ She was in Prague for business… perhaps to find a job” (9)

9. Tomas` philosophy about life being a vivid improvisation without a previous rehearsal, is a reflection of his actions. That is why he thinks about his long term decisions and feelings, he knows there is no turning back once he has made them. “ We can never know what to want, because, living only one life, we can neither compare it with our previous lives nor perfect it in our lives to come”. This also relates to the concept of eternal return mentioned in chapter 1.

Tereza breaks Tomas’ rules when she makes him have sentimental attachments towards her (he spends the night with her) and therefore, making him feel the urge to see her often. “The important thing is to abide the rule of threes. Either you see a woman three times in a quick succession and then never again, or you maintain relations over the years but make sure that the rendezvous are at least three weeks apart.” (P12)

13. Sabina finds Tereza a job: “It was Sabina he turned to when he needed to find a job for Tereza”

18. Tomas infidelity affects their relationship because it hurts Tereza. “But her jealousy thus tamed by day the burst forth all the more savagely in her dreams, each of which ended in a wail he could silence only by waking her”.

21. Tomas gets offered a job in Zurich, Switzerland but he rejects it “for Tereza’s sake.”

24. Beethoven relates to Tomas`s thoughts because his music was being played at the café where he met Tereza.
25. Tomas feel that Tereza innoncence is what brought them together. “Tereza was a child put in a pitch-daubed bulrush basket and sent downstream. He couldn`t very well let a basket with a child in it float down a stormy river”
